Namibian President Hage Geingob Dies: Namibian President Hage Geingob died in the early morning today (04 February 2024). In a statement issued by the Presidential Office of Namibia,
it has been said that he breathed his last in a hospital in Windhoek. Hage Geingob has said goodbye to the world at the age of 82. Geingob, who was elected as Namibian President for the second time, had revealed last month that he is suffering from cancer and is undergoing treatment for it.
Acting President Nangolo Mbumba also gave the news of the President’s demise through social media. Expressing grief, he wrote, ‘With great sadness and regret, I am informing everyone that our dear Dr. Hage Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia, has passed away today.’
Hage Geingob has 3 children
Hage Geingob’s wife’s name is Monica Geingos. He has 3 children. The news that Geingob was suffering from cancer was first revealed when he was undergoing a routine medical checkup last month. During the investigation, cancer cells were detected in his biopsy.
Held the post of Prime Minister for the longest period
Geingob has served Namibia as Prime Minister for the longest period. Apart from this, he was the third person to hold the post of President for the longest period.
Brain surgery was done in 2013
He had brain surgery in 2013 and last year he underwent aortic surgery in South Africa. Before his death, he was undergoing treatment at Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek.
Belonged to Ovambo ethnic group
Geingob was born in 1941 in a village in northern Namibia. Geingob belonged to the Ovambo ethnic group, which accounts for more than half the country’s population.
Spent 3 decades in Botswana
Geingob spent nearly three decades of his life in Botswana and the United States. Presidential and National Assembly elections are going to be held in Namibia at the end of this year.
