Chatra was the “headquarters” of Ramgarh district in the 18th and 19th centuries. The famous social reformer, Raja Rammohan Roy, served as Sheristadar in Ramgarh district in 1804-05 and worked in Ramgarh as well as Chatra. Later Ramgarh district became part of the North-West Frontier Agency and Hazaribagh district came into existence. In 1914, Chatra became a sub-division of Hazaribagh district. Finally in 1991 it got the status of a full district.
