A demon named Bhashmasur had a boon that anyone on whose head he placed his hand would be reduced to ashes. Lord Vishnu in Vamana form asked for three steps of land as donation from the demon. The demon gave him charity. But with the third foot he pushed the demon to the underworld.
While dying, Bhasmasura prayed to Lord Vishnu that he wanted to attain salvation from his hands. Lord Vishnu promised that in Kaliyuga, he will reside on earth in the form of Lord Venkateswara and will give salvation to Bhasmasura.
